Thanksgiving Gang ATX

First, I want to tell you that Chris Hallman is my hero. SERIOUSLY.
and if you're in the SG, he should be yours too.

three words:
BUCKET.OF.SOUP!

hallman is my hero! for real.

some of the most delicious minestrone soup you've ever had, walked two blocks (no, not that kid from ohio) in none other than a REAL bucket. i honestly cannot get over this.

the most amazing thing ever! A BUCKET OF (vegan) SOUP!!!!!!!!!!

When I called Soup Gang Prez, Leif Valin, to tell him about this feat he said, "Hallman is like the Soup Jesus".
I guess Leif meant that Hallman could take a bucket of water and turn it into a bucket of soup...

All Praise the motha'-fu@#*in' Soup Jesus, then.

soup in a bucket...what a beautiful thing!

next thanksgiving...a garbage can.

Vegan Black Eyed Pea & Baby Bella Soup

One of the most delicious soups i've made in a while. Maybe I say that every time. (I really love the stuff, what can i say?)
Anyway, the black eyed peas and the volume of baby bella mushrooms give this a very meaty texture.

Vegan Black Eyed Pea & Baby Bella SoupHere's what went in:

couple tbs. olive oil
thyme
crushed red pepper flakes
a ton of garlic
4 cups veg broth
approx. 2 tbs. miso
1 large carrot
3/4 small onion
2 ribs celery
approx. a cup or so baby portobella mushrooms
a splash of soy milk
a few tbs. nutritional yeast
fresh ground pepper

Just spicy enough to have a little bit of kick, but not burn your mouth.
the only problem is that i wish i had made twice as much...AT LEAST!

Meghan- SG-ATX
ps: I swear once everyone gets back into town we will start having meetings. If you read this, and are interested...get on my ass about it!

ok, i lied...no chili cook-off for us.

Billie and I are very sad to say that we were a bit premature in our entry to the chili cook-off. SO...disregard that last posting.

It turns out that it's a little more involved than we had thought, and had planned for. The supplies you need to participate are expensive, so we're going to have to hold off.

Anyway, you should go to it anyway...support your local vegetarian network...because i'm sure it will be delicious!

ah well....maybe next year. (it was gonna be a kick ass chili!)

Whatever's Left Soup...

I always forget how the process of making soup makes everything better. At least a little!

I felt like complete shit yesterday, but eventually had to eat. SO...i took whatever was left in my refrigerator and threw it in the pot.

Whatever's Left Soup Ended up being a tomato, a potato, some frozen corn, a carrot and a half, part of an onion, and i think that's it.

It was a mish-mash of flavors, and came out deliciously. Let's see...veggie stock, dill (as always), cilantro, cumin, lemon juice and a little tahini. I used the hand blender to make it a wee bit creamier.

And then i felt 10 times better.

an event and a process. SG meetings in the ATX soon.
FOR REAL.

impromptu mini-meeting in the ATX

The other night, billie called a super impromptu SG meeting. Mostly, she was hungry after work and wanted to make soup.

SO...of course i was down. We revisited the tahini soup from the first official SG meeting here in Austin. Turned out delicious. lots of baby bellas.

Vegan Tahini Soup

stew came over. he also came to the realization that bread is great when sopping up soup. (ok, maybe not a realization so much as just felt like he reaffirmed it for himself!).

taj came by after his band practice and had some too.

not an official meeting, of course. but delicious and warm. i can't wait for the cold weather here!

Post from Shalon- (SoupGang British Columbia, soon to be ATX)

I wasn't feeling so good the other day and I wanted soup. So I did what any rational person would do, I started making soup.

When the task at hand was completed and I sat down on my back deck admiring the cool breeze coming off the lake, the sun was making it's final creep towards the mountains which in turn glistened off my water glass and I thought, "I wish I had someone to enjoy this wonderful soup with me." then I realized, I wasn't alone. Though they may all be scattered about, I am never alone when I satisfy my pallet for soup.

I made a point of taking a picture of this super yummy soup. I have the original way I make it and then a simple substitute for the vegetarian version I use to make for an old roommate. A vegan version was attempted once, But nothing replaces butter/yogurt as far as I'm concerned. So here we go.

SHALON_SG_POST
Chicken and prawn curry soup:

(original reciepe):

5-6 tbl madras curry powder
1 cube chicken boullion cube
1 1/2 stick butter
1/2 plain yogurt
1 yellow Onion (preferably sweet) *cubed
1 red bell pepper *cubed
1 large handful cilantro*minced
1 med habanero*minced
1/2 can tomato paste
3-4 lbs ok bonless skinless chicken (thighs preferably)
1-2 lbs prawns
1 cup brown, red, wild (whatever you have) rice
2 cups of water
** for vegitarian: sub chicken boulliion for veg and sub meat for fried tofu. The texture is awsome in this dish. Also go ahead and add a few more veggies. Green beans and or mini potatoes work real well.

-low-med setting melt butter
-combine:onion
-tom paste
-curry powder
-habanero
-1/2 the cilantro
-bullion cube
-satay till onions are soft
-add chicken (tofu) when chicken is almost done,
-add rice/water
-leave on low for 20
(the water and rice can be skipped if rice is pre-cooked)
-when rice is tender add: Prawns
- bell pepper
- rest of cilantro
-let simmer for about 10min
-slowly add yougurt stiring while adding ( if you don't it'll curdle) and try to avoid using it right out of the fridge. leave out during prep.
-finally, add water for thinner consistancy usually a cup or two. Because of the amount of curry used it is quite an intense flavor dish so water it to taste or sipping preferance.

not a meeting, but definitely some eating!

ok, i'm a nerd.
anyway...we haven't really had any meetings, but i'm going to update this with a couple pictures of billie's creamy zucchini soup.
billie's "creamy" zucchini soup
it was delicious...and FUN to play with. See? Stew thought a "baby jesus" should go in.
a wee swimming pool, apparently.

And in completely unrelated news, Stew left town again for a couple weeks, which is always a bummer. To top it all off...he shaved off this sweet 'stache he was farming. I, myself am not psyched about that!
3 hours of sleep.

Alright, kids...i know it's getting hot...but SOUP.
NEVER FORGET!

Potato,Carrot,Arm,Leg

April Fools Soup Ganging

We had a soup ganging in littleton, colorado on April 1st 2007 AD. Mike,Christina,Nic,Brooke,Brittany ,myself and Brooklyn the black lab
showed up to soup it up!

Littleton is known for it`s small town name ,nice parks, jumpy cops, mass
school murders and Alfred Packer, among other things.

In my attempts to time travel and bring Alfred and his friends some good
soup so they wouldn`t have to eat each other where futile as my flux capacitor
was out of comission. So i had no heroic stories to tell when the crew came over and i kept my story of failure to myself.

The soup was a basic root dominated number,5 lbs potato`s,2 lbs carrots, peas, corn ,vegetable bouillon ,oregano, parsley, and a bit of olive oil.
With a small pot of pea soup w/ carrots for variety.

We all ate our fill washed down with some adult beverage then went on a field trip to Alfred`s grave which is within walking distance from my home.

A fun warm day indeed.

"Tonight, I celebrate my love for soup."

Here is a post from our friends in the northwest!
SoupPics (4 of 1)
Portland chapter represent! We made some kick-ass soup tonight, and then
sang "Tonight, I celebrate my love for soup." like that song by that guy
Peabo.
SoupPics (1 of 1)
It's called Moldy Gay Tawny. Which is Indian for "Pepper Water." Although,
mysteriously, it tasted neither like water nor pepper, but like heaven. It
should be called "Heaven Pepper" or "Wonderful Soup."

Some of my best friends, Sam and Erinmichelle were visiting from nyc. Erinmichelle is going to start a chapter in the city. Cant wait for some postings from that side of the world!

Uninspired...maybe. Going home hungry...never.

makings of a butternut bisque The weather in Austin has been amazing the last few days. Nic just got back from a brief stint living in Chicago, so Billie and i decided to have a meeting. Neither of us were very inspired to go on a shopping excursion or to cook...but we did it anyway. FOR THE LOVE OF SOUP, and the gang!!

This was a couple days ago, but again...it's been too nice to sit in front of the computer.

Here's Adam and Ryan having a few pre-meeting beers.adam and ryan, pre-soup beers

Billie made a really great Butternut Bisque and I (less motivated) ended up making a tomato-dill (and everything that was left in billie's veggie drawer and a few pantry additions) soup. Surprisingly, it was great. Hallman even called me a "Soup Goddess". I LOVE THAT!
freestyle...

anyway, looking forward to some chilled soups this summer, and some updates from other soup g's!

Chicago's coming home...

Nic Alarcon, who we are happy to say lives in Chicago for only a couple more days, sends this post today:

"So it snowed about a foot or more today. I had a real shitty day, so I decided to make some soup. This Red Pepper Lentil Soup was inspired by a non-vegan version that they make at Panera. It still sucks outside, but it's nice and warm in here now."

Thanks Nic!

(Souper) Freaks and Geeks...

Sam Weir special.

Billie has been trying to perfect a version of mulligatawny, a Indian curry soup. Last week she made a pot so delicious that soup gangster Brent Nutting, of Austin, cried, "This soup was so good, it made my knees buckle!!" Not only was the soup amazing, but it was such a special occasion that Billie busted out her Sam Weir (hailing from the old school Freaks and Geeks t.v. show) special edition ladle.

The Austin Soup Gang welcomes the new Elmira chapter, and will look forward to seeing more posts in the future.

Doing soup before soup was cool...

Soup with Kermit...

No Other Gangsters around to cook soup, so I called up some freinds from growing up to help...
the soup was dialed, along with some roasted Garlic Batard...
Fried potatoes, with garlic, tofu and jalepenos, dumped in some veggie broth with baby carrots, green onions, sweet corn, black beans, fresh spices and baby spinach.
There were some freinds around to eat it luckily, and another dinner was enjoyed.
Cold Weather remedy-Hot soup....

New Gangsters and A new Chapter!

jim Young and Jamie Czech have opened up a new Soup Gang chapter in ELmira Ny. The names might sound familiar to anyone has seen older FBM Vids, as they both skated in them. Jim Is now in the special forces, and cuts goats heads off and mails them to people, and Jamie is a dad. THe night was set off by Gilly making the trip up from Pa, and antagonizing a baby.
THe soup had its own gang too, a lil Miso soup buddy, and a fresh Veggie Pizza. The Green Vegetable soup had all kinds of shit in it, including pesto, and the like. Super Dialed. Zues was stoked, good times.....
