Impromptu ATX meeting, and a new chapter!

the real deal

WELL...i know we've been slacking seriously in the SG department as of late. Perhaps it was just hard to top the BUCKET of soup we had for thanksgiving...

It is now January, and the weather is up and down in Texas. I'm sure the weather is still miserable in other parts of the world and therefore i KNOW you must be making soup...you're just not telling us about it.

Here's what SG-atx has been up to the last few days...

Today:
impromptu meeting with only part of the Austin gang. Billie and i were suddenly inspired this evening, and made some (vegan) Tomato Artichoke soup. The recipe was from the Millenium cookbook. However, the author developed the recipe after eating similar soup at Austin's own Mother's Cafe! I don't mean to sound uppity when i say that I've had Mother's version, and this one solidly tops it. (that is NOT to detract from the deliciousness of Mother's, or any of the yummy things they make).

We had the soup with pressed vegan grilled cheese sandwiches made on a stove-top cast-iron grill, and a simple side salad. YUM!! the soup was awesome. seriously.

NOW...here is some other exciting news!

A friend of mine, Raychelle, is currently traveling the country with some kids who are from London. They are following the campaign and talking to people about American politics, etc. Dan is a journalist, and is writing a blog about the journey. Tom is illustrating it with his comic style drawings. It's pretty cool, really. If you're interested at all...check it out at:
My Fellow Americans

SG London, initiationANYWAY, Dan's entire myspace blog has always been devoted to soup, and he sometimes invites people over for soup-offs and such. So...what does that mean? Clearly he IS the London SG chapter, and he didn't even know it yet! AND...to prove it, he made me some mushroom-white-wine soup that was DELICIOUS!
Obviously I was psyched to welcome the London chapter to the Gang, and gave Dan one of my SG prints, made by Prez Leif Valin himself. He was psyched.

As you can see...alot to tell. but enough about us...
GO MAKE SOME SOUP AND TAKE A PICTURE!

There is nothing like soup. It is by nature eccentric: no two are ever alike, unless of course you get your soup in a can.

Thanksgiving Gang ATX

First, I want to tell you that Chris Hallman is my hero. SERIOUSLY.
and if you're in the SG, he should be yours too.

three words:
BUCKET.OF.SOUP!

hallman is my hero! for real.

some of the most delicious minestrone soup you've ever had, walked two blocks (no, not that kid from ohio) in none other than a REAL bucket. i honestly cannot get over this.

the most amazing thing ever! A BUCKET OF (vegan) SOUP!!!!!!!!!!

When I called Soup Gang Prez, Leif Valin, to tell him about this feat he said, "Hallman is like the Soup Jesus".
I guess Leif meant that Hallman could take a bucket of water and turn it into a bucket of soup...

All Praise the motha'-fu@#*in' Soup Jesus, then.

soup in a bucket...what a beautiful thing!

next thanksgiving...a garbage can.

Vegan Black Eyed Pea & Baby Bella Soup

One of the most delicious soups i've made in a while. Maybe I say that every time. (I really love the stuff, what can i say?)
Anyway, the black eyed peas and the volume of baby bella mushrooms give this a very meaty texture.

Vegan Black Eyed Pea & Baby Bella SoupHere's what went in:

couple tbs. olive oil
thyme
crushed red pepper flakes
a ton of garlic
4 cups veg broth
approx. 2 tbs. miso
1 large carrot
3/4 small onion
2 ribs celery
approx. a cup or so baby portobella mushrooms
a splash of soy milk
a few tbs. nutritional yeast
fresh ground pepper

Just spicy enough to have a little bit of kick, but not burn your mouth.
the only problem is that i wish i had made twice as much...AT LEAST!

Meghan- SG-ATX
ps: I swear once everyone gets back into town we will start having meetings. If you read this, and are interested...get on my ass about it!

ok, i lied...no chili cook-off for us.

Billie and I are very sad to say that we were a bit premature in our entry to the chili cook-off. SO...disregard that last posting.

It turns out that it's a little more involved than we had thought, and had planned for. The supplies you need to participate are expensive, so we're going to have to hold off.

Anyway, you should go to it anyway...support your local vegetarian network...because i'm sure it will be delicious!

ah well....maybe next year. (it was gonna be a kick ass chili!)

Whatever's Left Soup...

I always forget how the process of making soup makes everything better. At least a little!

I felt like complete shit yesterday, but eventually had to eat. SO...i took whatever was left in my refrigerator and threw it in the pot.

Whatever's Left Soup Ended up being a tomato, a potato, some frozen corn, a carrot and a half, part of an onion, and i think that's it.

It was a mish-mash of flavors, and came out deliciously. Let's see...veggie stock, dill (as always), cilantro, cumin, lemon juice and a little tahini. I used the hand blender to make it a wee bit creamier.

And then i felt 10 times better.

an event and a process. SG meetings in the ATX soon.
FOR REAL.
