Perhaps it was just hard to top the BUCKET of soup we had for thanksgiving...

It is now January, and the weather is up and down in Texas. I'm sure the weather is still miserable in other parts of the world and therefore i KNOW you must be making soup...you're just not telling us about it.

Here's what SG-atx has been up to the last few days...

Today:
impromptu meeting with only part of the Austin gang. Billie and i were suddenly inspired this evening, and made some (vegan) Tomato Artichoke soup. The recipe was from the Millenium cookbook. However, the author developed the recipe after eating similar soup at Austin's own Mother's Cafe! I don't mean to sound uppity when i say that I've had Mother's version, and this one solidly tops it. (that is NOT to detract from the deliciousness of Mother's, or any of the yummy things they make).

We had the soup with pressed vegan grilled cheese sandwiches made on a stove-top cast-iron grill, and a simple side salad. YUM!! the soup was awesome. seriously.

NOW...here is some other exciting news!

A friend of mine, Raychelle, is currently traveling the country with some kids who are from London. They are following the campaign and talking to people about American politics, etc. Dan is a journalist, and is writing a blog about the journey. Tom is illustrating it with his comic style drawings. It's pretty cool, really. If you're interested at all...check it out at:
My Fellow Americans

ANYWAY, Dan's entire myspace blog has always been devoted to soup, and he sometimes invites people over for soup-offs and such. So...what does that mean? Clearly he IS the London SG chapter, and he didn't even know it yet! AND...to prove it, he made me some mushroom-white-wine soup that was DELICIOUS!
Obviously I was psyched to welcome the London chapter to the Gang, and gave Dan one of my SG prints, made by Prez Leif Valin himself. He was psyched.

As you can see...alot to tell. but enough about us...
GO MAKE SOME SOUP AND TAKE A PICTURE!

Meghan- SG-Atx

There is nothing like soup. It is by nature eccentric: no two are ever alike, unless of course you get your soup in a can.

Thanksgiving Gang ATX

First, I want to tell you that Chris Hallman is my hero. Mostly, she was hungry after work and wanted to make soup.

SO...of course i was down. We revisited the tahini soup from the first official SG meeting here in Austin. Turned out delicious. lots of baby bellas.

stew came over. he also came to the realization that bread is great when sopping up soup. (ok, maybe not a realization so much as just felt like he reaffirmed it for himself!).

taj came by after his band practice and had some too.

not an official meeting, of course. but delicious and warm. i can't wait for the cold weather here!

Don't forget...Soup Makes the Soldier.
Meghan SG-ATX

Post from Shalon- (SoupGang British Columbia, soon to be ATX)

I wasn't feeling so good the other day and I wanted soup. So I did what any rational person would do, I started making soup.

When the task at hand was completed and I sat down on my back deck admiring the cool breeze coming off the lake, the sun was making it's final creep towards the mountains which in turn glistened off my water glass and I thought, "I wish I had someone to enjoy this wonderful soup with me." then I realized, I wasn't alone. Though they may all be scattered about, I am never alone when I satisfy my pallet for soup.

I made a point of taking a picture of this super yummy soup. I have the original way I make it and then a simple substitute for the vegetarian version I use to make for an old roommate. A vegan version was attempted once, But nothing replaces butter/yogurt as far as I'm concerned. So here we go.

Chicken and prawn curry soup:

(original reciepe):

5-6 tbl madras curry powder
1 cube chicken boullion cube
1 1/2 stick butter
1/2 plain yogurt
1 yellow Onion (preferably sweet) *cubed
1 red bell pepper *cubed
1 large handful cilantro*minced
1 med habanero*minced
1/2 can tomato paste
3-4 lbs ok bonless skinless chicken (thighs preferably)
1-2 lbs prawns
1 cup brown, red, wild (whatever you have) rice
2 cups of water
** for vegitarian: sub chicken boulliion for veg and sub meat for fried tofu. The texture is awsome in this dish. Also go ahead and add a few more veggies. Green beans and or mini potatoes work real well.

-low-med setting melt butter
-combine:onion
-tom paste
-curry powder
-habanero
-1/2 the cilantro
-bullion cube
-satay till onions are soft
-add chicken (tofu) when chicken is almost done,
-add rice/water
-leave on low for 20
(the water and rice can be skipped if rice is pre-cooked)
-when rice is tender add: Prawns
- bell pepper
- rest of cilantro
-let simmer for about 10min
-slowly add yougurt stiring while adding ( if you don't it'll curdle) and try to avoid using it right out of the fridge. leave out during prep.
-finally, add water for thinner consistancy usually a cup or two. Because of the amount of curry used it is quite an intense flavor dish so water it to taste or sipping preferance.

Udon... post from Nic [SG_ATX]

So I was sick this week. Mike,Christina,Nic,Brooke,Brittany ,myself and Brooklyn the black lab
showed up to soup it up!

Littleton is known for it`s small town name ,nice parks, jumpy cops, mass
school murders and Alfred Packer, among other things.

In my attempts to time travel and bring Alfred and his friends some good
soup so they wouldn`t have to eat each other where futile as my flux capacitor
was out of comission. So i had no heroic stories to tell when the crew came over and i kept my story of failure to myself.

The soup was a basic root dominated number,5 lbs potato`s,2 lbs carrots, peas, corn ,vegetable bouillon ,oregano, parsley, and a bit of olive oil.
With a small pot of pea soup w/ carrots for variety.

We all ate our fill washed down with some adult beverage then went on a field trip to Alfred`s grave which is within walking distance from my home.

A fun warm day indeed.
Leif

NEW Soup Gang Logo/Button!!!

SG president, Leif Valin, sent over this new Soup Gang image, which will be the next round of buttons.

Once i stop being lazy, i will make a bunch and send them to Leif.

if you want a couple, once again...send me your address at the soup gang myspace page or let me know!

-Meghan

Here's What's been going on!!!

Well, its getting warmer in Austin...but that doesn't mean we love soup any less. In Austin, we are fortunate enough to have a GIANT asian grocery store way up north. It's truly amazing, and has a gazillion fake meats, sauces, snacks, etc...

WELL, the last time i went there i picked up some veggie broth (sans MSG, which is something you HAVE to watch for in this store). This became the base for this super quick soup. Sauteed up the rest of the veggies in my crisper, dumped them into the broth along with a few frozen vegetable dumplings (courtesy of the same store). A little on the cheating side, but took no time at all, used up some stuff and was delish as hell!

bellies love soup.
-Meghan

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MeG2rt9vzR8/RbvwSesybvI/AAAAAAAAACc/IhcFr74BcBI/s400/soupt2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024874009531150066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MeG2rt9vzR8/RbvwTusybwI/AAAAAAAAACk/or7leG8bUw0/s400/soupt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024874031005986562" />
No crazy outlaw gangster meetings, but in Ithaca, it was proven you can still get some Tomatillos when it is 4 degrees outside. I say I cheated because i used one of those cartons of organic potato leek soup (which, mind you, has neither enough flavor nor salt to stand alone!). Then i added some fake chicken stock. i sauteed garlic, onion, carrots, celery, some broccoli and some cabbage and added those. Threw in a bay leaf or two, some italian type seasonings, nutritional yeast, SALT and pepper. Then pureed half of it to bring the creaminess back up. It was surprisingly delicious!

ghetto soupin' gone right.
warm yesterday, cold today. We also heated up some Minestrone that Billie had made before. Accompanying the soups was a green salad (with the most amazing vegan caesar dressing ever), a kick-ass pasta salad by Billie and some amazing breads we bought at whole foods. And for desert, vegan peanut butter cookies with chocolate or jam.

A special shout-out to Taj for bringing a 12 pack of Coca-cola, most of which he consumed throughout the duration of the meeting (i exaggerate for effect).

Full on Soup Gangster action took place with the following people in attendance: Billie and myself, Leif, Corrigan, Joe, Sandy, Jen, Taj, Stew, Hallman and at least a couple dogs.

The business side of the gang is in the works. The soup was already to go by the time I showed up, as was a delighful cup of PG tips. Not Bad, if I had to compare the awesomeness of it, it might compare to the old bike in the pic, which I think is pretty dang kick ass.

Soup de Yule

Christmas in Austin found us sitting around a table with friends and a giant pot of soup. "Autumn Harvest Stew" to be more precise. This recipe came from this amazing cookbook: which Billie bought for me for xmas. BEST GIFT EVER. I cant wait to make more of them. Anyway, soup, salad, some amazing tofu, a little boozin' and good company made for one of my favorite holidays ever.
here's a photo of the deliciousness to make your mouth water

and of course, the gang (minus some key members), and then some were here...

In other news, there's a rumor that SG founder Leif Valin will be in town in a matter of days. It was sort of an experiment, really. The recipe ended up being a bit on the bland side, but with a little faux chicken stock, some parsley (the king of all ingredients) and some hot sauce, it was pretty delish. Stew Johnson ate it...but we all know stew+anyfood=happy.

I think the move next time is to add: roasted corn (instead of frozen), roasted red peppers (instead of raw), and some poblano peppers.

Yesterday it was 64 degrees in nyc and 42 in austin.

Happy Souping...Texas Freezes.

PS: soup gang now has a myspace page as well.
Kill the Bad, Eat the Good

<img style="float:left;
